As a cardiologist, I avoid eating chips because they are a type of junk food that is detrimental to heart health. They are popular snacks in the U.S. but are high in additives and low in beneficial nutrients. Regular consumption of chips can lead to high sodium intake, elevated blood pressure, and significant weight gain, which negatively affects cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Studies show that poor-quality food can impair blood vessel function shortly after consumption. To promote a healthy heart, I recommend alternatives such as hummus with veggies, raw nuts (without salt), and fruits like bananas and oranges, which provide fiber, healthy fats, vitamins, antioxidants, and plant sterols. We often reach for chips out of boredom or cravings, but these are not good reasons to consume something that harms heart health. Instead, opt for whole foods with essential nutrients.
