DC Mayor Implements 'Big Brother' Digital Vehicle Tracking Program Amid Rising Car Thefts
The nation’s capital has seen a significant rise in violent crimes, with car thefts increasing by 101% this year alone, reaching a total of 5,916 as compared to 2,942 in the previous year. Additionally, the city has experienced a surge in homicides that haven’t been seen in two decades, and incidents of robbery have even affected government officials.
In response to the growing crime rates, Mayor Bowser has introduced a crime bill to enforce law and order. She believes that equipping residents with technology and improving collaboration between the community and the MPD will aid in addressing and resolving these crimes, recovering stolen vehicles, and holding accountable those responsible.
This announcement aligns with the mayor’s approach of utilizing various tools for community safety, such as the Private Security Camera Incentive Program and the wheel lock distribution program.
Similar to DC, Democratic Mayor London Breed of San Francisco had to change her progressive policies due to a significant increase in crime within the city.
Mayor Bowser’s efforts to combat car thefts have faced criticism, with some questioning whether a surveillance program is the appropriate solution. However, the mayor remains committed to implementing various strategies to ensure public safety.
The tweet accompanying the announcement highlights the new program aimed at providing digital tracking tags to DC residents free of charge, reinforcing the commitment to utilizing all available tools to maintain a safe environment in the city.
