Several major brands have stopped advertising on X, formerly known as Twitter, due to concerns about hate speech and antisemitism on the platform. Last week, brands including Fox Sports, Ubisoft, Axios, TechCrunch, and Paris Hilton’s 11:11 Media announced that they had paused their ad spending on X, joining other large advertisers that had already left. This is a significant blow to X, which has been struggling to attract brands back to the platform since Elon Musk took over last year. Additionally, many X users are also switching to alternative platforms, and even the White House has joined a competitor platform called Threads. The recent advertiser exodus began when IBM suspended advertising on X after their ads were found to have run alongside pro-Nazi content. Musk’s endorsement of an antisemitic conspiracy theory further fueled the backlash. Major media brands like Disney, Paramount, Comcast, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, and Warner Bros. Discovery followed suit, with reports that Apple also pulled its ad spend on X. X has filed a lawsuit against Media Matters, accusing them of misrepresenting the likelihood of ads running alongside extremist content. However, the company has not taken significant steps to reassure advertisers, as pro-Nazi accounts identified by Media Matters remain active on the platform, including accounts reinstated by Musk himself. Advertisers such as the National Football League have expressed concerns about hate speech to X leadership but have not pulled their spending.
