Workers Make Gains in 2023 #

Workers in the United States made their voices heard in 2023 through a significant number of strikes. A total of 393 strikes involving over 500,000 workers took place between January 1 and November 30, marking the highest number of work stoppages involving 1,000 or more workers since 2013. These strikes resulted in important victories for workers. In the first quarter of 2023, union-represented workers experienced an average wage increase of 7% in the first year of their contracts, the largest quarterly wage hike since 2007.

The successful strikes included various unions’ efforts, such as those by Hollywood writers, TV and film actors, auto workers, and healthcare workers. The writers secured a 5% wage increase in the first year, along with minimum staffing levels and protections regarding the use of artificial intelligence. Actors gained a 7% wage hike in their first year, as well as a new bonus structure for streaming shows and movies. Auto workers achieved a minimum 33% wage increase and expanded job coverage, including electric vehicle and battery jobs. Healthcare workers secured a 6% wage hike and measures to address staffing shortages.

Experts attribute the success of these strikes to both the momentum gained in previous years and the favorable labor market conditions. The pandemic highlighted the power of unions, and successful efforts were made by workers in various industries to organize and advocate for better conditions. With a low unemployment rate, workers had increased bargaining power. Additionally, many union contracts were up for renegotiation, leading to a greater number of workers participating in negotiations.

The gains made by unionized workers are expected to have a broader impact beyond their immediate membership. In a competitive labor market, non-unionized employers may need to match union standards to attract and retain talent. The positive effect of this is already being seen, with non-union companies raising wages in response to union negotiations. This trend indicates that workers in general could benefit from the gains made by unions in 2023.
